Intraoperative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (iMRI)
Tampa General Hospital¡¯s new intraoperative MRI (iMRI) surgical suite provides high-resolution MRI imaging of the brain during neurosurgery. This technology allows neurosurgeons to view real-time images of the brain during and after surgery. It reduces the risk of damaging other parts of the brain and helps confirm successful removal of the tumor. The large MRI machine is housed in a room next to the surgical suite. With the push of a button, sliding doors open and? the? MRI machine travels into the surgical suite on a ceiling track to the patient. Before this technology, the patient had to be transported mid-surgery, to another area of the hospital for MRI images to be obtained, and then brought back to the surgical suite. Now, technologists operate the MRI from a control room inside the operating suite and surgeons can view the high-resolution images of the patient¡¯s brain on large monitors immediately and then continue the surgery based on these images. When the images are completed, the MRI machine travels back to its holding room behind the sliding doors.
