Lymphoma Treatment Options at Tampa General Hospital
The type of lymphoma treatment a patient receives depends on a multitude of factors, including the type and stage of cancer, as well as the patient＊s preferences and overall health.
The most common forms of lymphoma treatment are:
- Chemotherapy 每 The use of drugs, given either by pill or through infusion, to destroy cancer cells, usually by stopping the cancer cells＊ ability to grow and divide. This is the main treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
- Radiation therapy 每 The use of high energy X-rays to destroy cancer cells and shrink cancerous tumors. Depending on the type and stage of lymphoma, this is usually performed following chemotherapy.
- Stem cell transplant 每 The medical procedure in which bone marrow that contains cancer is replaced by highly specialized cells that develop into healthy bone marrow. This is usually performed when high doses of chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy damage the bone marrow and inhibit its ability to produce healthy blood cells.
- Immunotherapy 每 Used only to treat non-Hodgkin lymphoma, this is considered a type of biologic therapy that is designed to boost the body＊s natural defenses to fight cancer.
