Lung Cancer Treated at Tampa General Hospital

Physician comforting a patientLung cancer is the growth of irregular cells that occur within the cone-shaped, spongy tissue of the lungs. Though this type of cancer can occur anywhere in the lungs, it most commonly begins on the outside of the organ or in the lining of the air passageways. Due to the large area in which the cancer can occur along with the fact that many early stage lung cancers present with ambiguous symptoms, such as coughing, it is rare for lung cancer to be diagnosed in its early stages (stages I and II). Instead, it is usually detected at stage III or IV, when the likelihood of a positive treatment outcome is significantly decreased.

There are two major types of lung cancer. The most common is non-small cell cancer, which is named for the types of cells involved with the cancerous tumor. This type includes squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and large cell carcinoma. The next most common type, small-cell carcinoma, occurs in the small cells and tends to spread quickly. There is also a third type 每 lung carcinoid tumors 每 which account for a very small percentage of lung cancers.?

Additionally, lung cancers can be further categorized as:

  • Primary 每 This type of cancer originates in the lungs.
  • Secondary 每 This type of lung cancer travels to the lungs from another area of the body and is referred to by the place it originated. Cancers in the lungs can metastasize to other areas as well.
