Different Types of Leukemia Treatment

The type of leukemia treatment a patient receives depends on a variety of factors, such as the nature and severity of the condition, the patient*s age, past medical history and overall health. Personal preferences may also be considered when assessing the various treatment options.

In general, leukemia treatment usually includes one or more of the following:

  • Chemotherapy 每 This is the administration of drugs, either by pill or through infusion, to treat certain types of cancers.
  • Radiation therapy 每 This is a treatment option that aims high-energy rays at cancer cells in order to destroy the cancer.
  • Stem cell transplant 每 Usually performed after chemotherapy and radiation therapy is completed, this procedure involves the transplant of blood-forming stem cells to help restore the damaged bone marrow.
  • Surgical intervention 每 This type of treatment is commonly utilized to remove the spleen if it has become enlarged due to leukemia.
