HDR Brachytherapy is a type of focused radiation therapy used to treat many cancers including gynecological and skin cancers. Unlike external beam radiation delivered by a machine that aims the radiation to the part of the body where the tumor is located, brachytherapy is delivered through applicators. The applicators are placed internally near the tumor for cervical or endometrial cancer, or directly on the skin to treat skin cancer.
Treatment is faster because it is a higher dose of radiation so a patient may only need brachytherapy treatments two or three times a week instead of five days a week with external radiation therapy. Treatments are typically performed on an outpatient basis.
Our TomoTherapy Hi-Art treatment system provides highly precise targeting and attacking of cancer cells. This helps to effectively treat hard-to-reach and complex tumors while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue and organs, and lowering the risk of pain and complications.
What is TomoTherapy?
TomoTherapy is an advanced, image-guided intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) that:
- Is the only radiation therapy system designed on a CT scanner foundation. Advanced radiation technology is built in, letting your treatment team complete your treatment all in one place.
- Uses daily CTrue? imaging to guide the treatment each day 每 so doctors can adjust your treatment as they go based on even the smallest changes in your anatomy.
- Is capable of treating small, large and multiple tumors 每 in multiple areas of the body 每 during the same treatment session or course of treatment.
- Attacks tumors with highly precise radiation delivered from 360 degrees around you 每 which increases the control doctors have in getting radiation where it needs to be and helps to decrease the damage to surrounding healthy tissue and organs.
Can be adapted at any point to best deliver your treatment, making sure you get the right dosage, in the right places at the right time.
Types of cancer treated
Radiation oncologists have treated many types of cancers with the TomoTherapy system, ranging from routine to complex types including:
- Breast cancer
- Prostate cancer
- Head and neck cancer
- Lung cancer
- Pediatric cancer
TomoTherapy Treatment Sessions
A typical course of radiation therapy involves a daily visit, Monday through Friday. The number of treatments varies by case. On average, the full daily TomoTherapy procedure takes less than 30 minutes from when you enter the treatment room until you leave. This includes time for the daily CT imaging process to be performed and for treatment to be delivered (＆beam-on time＊). The remaining time is used for set-up and proper positioning. TomoTherapy treatments are painless. The experience is similar to having a CT scan or an x-ray taken. You＊ll hear hums and clicks of the system at work 每 calibrating to your customized treatment plan 每 but treatment is comfortable and peaceful.
