Lung Replacement at Tampa General Hospital
A lung replacement may be necessary if a person¡¯s own lungs can no longer adequately transfer oxygen into the blood, or filter out carbon dioxide. A patient¡¯s physician will typically recommend several other treatments before considering a transplant, but if medications, oxygen therapy, and other treatments do not produce the necessary results, a lung replacement may eventually become an option. The severity of a patient¡¯s lung disease will determine which one or both lungs need to be replaced. These procedures are known as single-lung transplants and double-lung transplants, respectively. Transplant operations are most commonly performed for individuals with one of the following diagnoses:
- Cystic fibrosis
- Pulmonary fibrosis
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Primary pulmonary hypertension
Patients with these and other conditions can be referred to Tampa General Hospital for a lung replacement. The dedicated team of medical professionals and supportive care specialists in our lung transplant center understands what it takes to give each patient the best chance of a successful transplant, and will assess each candidate on an individual basis using details from his or her physician-submitted Cardiothoracic Transplant referral form to determine whether a transplant is the most appropriate form of treatment.
